Based on that groundbreaking research, here are 10 steps organizations can take to make the most of their collaborative assets:

Invest in an IP foundation. The launch pad to the world of advanced collaboration rests on a capabilities-rich IP infrastructure. Flexible and expansive IP networks provide a foundation for a successful deployment of unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) tools and should be equipped with on-demand bandwidth and classes of service to accommodate increased traffic loads and support a high-quality end-user experience. The study found IP networks are growing as a foundation for business operations, and collaboration has gone beyond traditional conferencing services to encompass more IP-based applications.

Establish a Benchmark for Collaborative Success. Survey stakeholders to understand their work needs and willingness to embrace change. How is business conducted today and how can UC&C empower employees by streamlining and improving business processes? Determine current and future requirements, and plan accordingly.

Focus on the End Goals. Avoid hype and examine what business problems must be resolved. Then build a UC&C plan based on long-term and short-term goals. Carefully evaluate network, hardware and software options to validate their ability to meet current and future enterprise objectives. Make technology investment decisions that make the most of existing assets.

Combine Ingredients to Create a Complete Experience. UC&C is a strategy - not a specific technology. Effective collaboration is not just about data or video or voice or mobility, it is about how the tools are combined to create a collaborative experience that can reap the maximum benefits.

Create a Culture of Collaboration. Meetings Around the World II found an organization's culture to be a key factor in collaboration capability; even more so than what the first Meetings Around the World study found. Technology is important, but it must be deployed in an organization that is open, with a decentralized decision-making structure. Top executives must be advocates for collaboration tools to promote their use among all employees.

Listen to the Workforce. With current technologies, work has become an anytime, anywhere activity. In the study, 61 percent of respondents say they like to work from anywhere, yet only 47 percent indicated they have a formal telecommuting policy in place and less than a third say they telecommute at least once a week. Evaluate policies to promote efficiencies and productivity within the organization. Morale may even rise in the process.

Big Leaps Often Begin with Baby Steps. Meetings Around the World II showed that organizations of all sizes can increase their return on collaboration investment and that adding progressively more advanced collaboration tools can lead to a correspondingly higher return. Educate users about instant messaging, desktop and mobile voice calls, and audio, Web and video conferencing technologies to achieve value. Consider hosted solutions as they allow an organization to ramp up quickly and scale the operation to changing needs.

Partner with the best. Partner with a solutions provider that can integrate multiple technology platforms for best success. Decide whether to manage UC&C in-house or to choose a managed services provider with the manpower, tools and processes to help provide consistent performance of UC&C applications.

Be Inclusive. Good collaboration goes beyond the organization. The Meetings Around the World II study found teams using UC&C tools can benefit from a "network effect" -- a theory attributed to Robert Metcalfe, the co-inventor of Ethernet, that holds that the more users on a network, the more value is likely realized from it. Extend a culture of collaboration to customers, suppliers and partners to help increase reach and returns on collaboration investment.

Mark Progress Along the Way. Build milestones to measure success. Identify internal benchmarks to determine the impact of UC&C on sales and marketing, finances, the corporate culture and end-user satisfaction, and make improvements as needed.

The Meetings Around the World II study explored how employees in businesses and governments use technology to collaborate and found organizations deploying more advanced Internet protocol (IP) collaboration tools - like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), instant messaging, audio, Web or video conferencing or immersive video for near life-like visual communications - also have a higher return on their collaboration investment.

You also may download the entire report from Webtorials by clicking here.

Proprietary Application by Glowpoint Enables Scheduled or On Demand Remote Diagnostics of Video Rooms for VNOC Managed Service Customers

<a href="http://www.glowpoint.com target=" _blank?>Glowpoint announced the unveiling of an automated diagnostic application called Video Room Sweep ("VRS") that automatically performs comprehensive "sweeps" and emulations of video sessions for all components of telepresence and video conferencing rooms. Designed to offer a more automated and scalable proactive level of managed service, VRS can ensure higher in-use rates of video technology, resulting in predictable performance and a higher return on investment.

As a component of Glowpoint's cloud-based managed video services, VRS is exclusively available for Glowpoint's Video Network Operations Center ("VNOC") clients and partner clients. Version 1.0 of VRS supports Polycom and Cisco technologies and, beginning in the first quarter of 2010, Glowpoint plans to release additional versions that will support other technologies, such as Tandberg and LifeSize systems.

VRS can be programmed for automatic daily sweeps and can also be used as an on-demand troubleshooting tool. VRS tests and diagnoses the health of all components in a telepresence or video conferencing room, along with functionality of the network to ensure proper performance and readiness. Following a room sweep, automated exception reporting and notifications prompt the VNOC of any service, hardware, connectivity or compatibility issues, where highly responsive remediation measures are then immediately implemented.

VRS provides users with the following features and benefits:

Accessibility Verification - verifies the accessibility and status of every network device in a room, such as video codecs, IP phones, control panels, PCs, projectors, and switches

QoS Measurement - tests local video to ensure proper functionality by measuring video packet loss, audio packet loss, and packet loss percentages through electronic means as well as via an actual video call that is automatically launched to visually gauge determine video and audio quality

Room Readiness - checks the local video and audio hardware components, such as speakers, monitors and projectors, to ensure full functionality

Version Inventory - analyzes and compares all room components and system/software/firmware versions to ensure that they are consistent with the VNOC's database

The daily results of the diagnostics will be available to VNOC customers through Glowpoint's Web-based user portal. Upcoming versions will also offer VNOC customers the ability to activate on-demand sweeps independent of the managed service technicians. Glowpoint's VNOC and managed services support thousands of rooms and systems globally, offering a single point of contact for the comprehensive management of telepresence and video environments.

Glowpoint's VNOC service includes on-line and MS Exchange TM integrated conference scheduling, call launching, conference production, 24/7 remote monitoring, trouble remediation, along with a broad spectrum of room performance reporting features.

Napatech
recently announced the availability of unique features that provide
visibility into tunnels for network monitoring and analysis of
value-added services running over IP, such as VOIP, VPN and mobile
data. Napatech's network adapters have the unique capability to
intelligently distribute 10Gbps flows in real-time to up to 32 CPU
cores based on Ethernet, IP, MPLS, layer 4 and now GTP, GRE and SCTP
tunnel information.

As more services transition to 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps IP networks, the
importance of network monitoring and analysis is increasing - but so
are the demands on intelligence and processing capabilities. By using
Napatech's family of network adapters for real-time network analysis,
Napatech's OEM customers can build high performance network appliances
providing new levels of intelligence and throughput performance.

"Tunneling is often used in networking to transparently and
securely transport data over a Wide Area Network. This is particularly
true for value-added services that rely on IP. However, other network
adapters used for network monitoring and analysis can only recognize
the Ethernet frame and IP header and not the tunneling protocol or
encapsulation information. Napatech is the first network adapter vendor
to provide visibility into these tunnels for network monitoring and
analysis purposes. This combined with our unique ability to
intelligently distribute 10 Gbps flows to up to 32 CPU cores in
real-time makes it possible to fully monitor and analyze VOIP, VPNs and
Mobile Data Networks", says Erik Norup, President, Napatech, Inc.

Napatech's network adapters provide sustained full line-rate 1Gbps
and 10Gbps throughput per port both on reception and transmission of
packets. The adapter recognizes layer 2 through 4 protocols including
SCTP, GTP and GRE tunneling protocols, as well as a number of
encapsulation methods, such as VLANs, multiple MPLS labels and Cisco
ISL. Napatech network adapters can also compute 17 different types of
hash-keys, which can be dynamically selected based on the recognized
protocol information. Using the computed hash-key or an equal
distribution method, flows can be distributed across 32 CPU cores,
allowing parallel processing. This allows the application to fully
utilize available CPU cores.

As the first proof point of its Borderless Networks architecture, Cisco announced the second generation of its Integrated Services Router, the ISR G2.

The Cisco ISR G2 helps businesses and service providers simplify and scale delivery of on-demand, networked business services like video and collaborative applications at branch offices. It serves as a natural part of the company's Borderless Networks architecture, which combines Cisco's routing, switching, wireless, and security technologies into a more tightly integrated networking infrastructure that allows businesses to embrace the growing use of video, collaborative applications, and other networked services and deliver them across their enterprises. With Borderless Networks, information technology managers can more easily manage, scale, govern, and protect networks while tightening the synergy between users, devices, applications, and business processes.

Highlights

The Cisco ISR G2 portfolio is built on the company's 25-year routing heritage. It offers as much as five times the performance of its predecessor, the Cisco ISR, the industry's most widely deployed router with more than 7 million units sold since its introduction in 2004.

Business video: With business video adoption expected to climb to 77.6 percent by 2012 (Cisco VNI Research), and with video proven to play a key role in enabling business innovation and better customer service, the video-ready architecture and new video digital signal processors in the ISR G2 will be key to delivering medianet capabilities essential to the borderless networks experience.

Service virtualization with an "on-demand" service delivery: Borderless Networks solutions decouple hardware and software so that virtual services can be remotely deployed and managed. The ISR G2 implements this with the innovative Services-Ready Engine, which lets businesses dynamically deploy services in branches without costly onsite support. The ISR G2 Services Module comes with up to 1 terabyte of on-board storage, which is useful for video surveillance deployments, and supports up to seven times the performance of previous network modules.

Operational savings: The Borderless Networks architecture delivers Cisco EnergyWise across multiple platforms to enable organizations to better manage their power consumption and costs through increased visibility and policy-based controls. ISR G2 extends this capability to the branch office with a new family of integrated EnergyWise compliant switch modules and slot-based power control.

The borderless experience: The Borderless Networks architecture breaks down boundaries between location, device, and application. As applications and services are increasingly offered and consumed from beyond the enterprise perimeter, a new approach will be required. The ISR G2 enables sophisticated premise-based services while extending mobility, security, and performance to users, no matter where the user or application is located.

When compared to traditional WAN services such as Frame Relay and MPLS, APNs provide both higher levels of reliability , dramatic cost savings, and significantly more bandwidth. An APN is based on packet-by-packet, real-time traffic
engineering that leverages the reliability and bandwidth of multiple
active paths through the Internet. The reliability improvement that APN
delivers by leveraging multiple active paths allows an APN to exploit
the superior price/performance of consumer-oriented ISP services."

Steven Taylor recently conducted a technically oriented interview with
Talari executives concerning their "APN technology. In this webcast,
we found that APN provides the capability to use multiple inexpensive
WAN links to provide a service level that's comparable with MPLS
services. This goes beyond traditional load balancing by measuring
latency and other key parameters for optimization.
